Home Tour: Our Entryway Makeover

Home Tour: Our Entryway Makeover

We have another room reveal for you today! Just like our office that we showed you on Wednesday, the makeover of our entryway was a long-time coming. A few years ago we painted the room yellow, along with the stairway and all the way up through the upstairs hallway. It wasn’t terrible — it was just So – Much – Yellow. It was so much yellow that the sales guy at Sherwin Williams actually made fun of us when we went to pick up like our 5th gallon, haha! (The color is Sherwin Williams “Optimistic Yellow.”)

Before:

Plus, the entryway light, which was here when we moved in and may be fairly original to the house, casts a yellow glow making yellow walls even yellower — and turns blue paint green, grey paint dingy, etc. So deciding on a new color was tough.

Remember this?

That’s A LOT of samples.

And we didn’t pick any of them!!

We decided to paint our entryway … WHITE.

Yes, good old white. Because when all else fails, paint it white, right? We used the same color we painted our living room, Valspar Ultra White, which is just an off-the-shelf, unmixed color available at Lowe’s, and I think it’s perfect. [[The table on the left is antique, the paper mache rhinoceros (named Jacques) is from Anthropologie, the fox tray is from Target, and the metal bike was a housewarming gift.]]

We decided to keep the yellow paint on the stairway, mostly because that is the worst job ever — the walls are so high! — and when we did it last time, we said we’ll move before we ever paint it again. But, luckily, I like how the yellow and white work together, so we didn’t need to repaint. [[The table above is from Home Goods, and the rug is CB2. The chalkboard frame, Vernors box and the metal arrow on the wall are all from flea markets.]]

I also love how the white paint allows the original woodwork to take centerstage, as well as the gorgeous stained glass doors. [[This black table, above, was my great grandfather’s. The typewriter was Andy’s grandfather’s. The vase is Target, and the flowers are from Urban Orchid.]]

In this photo you can see how the entryway opens to the rumpus room. It also opens to the living room and the dining room — so many doors. [[The mirror is also from a flea market, and I painted it.]]

So what do you think of the new white walls in our entryway?

Happy Friday and have a great long weekend, guys! I hope you guys have lots of barbeques to go to… and maybe it’ll even start to warm up again? We’re going to spend the weekend mostly relaxing after the craziness of last weekend, and tonight we’re celebrating our belated 3-year anniversary (it was Tuesday) with a nice dinner. We’re going to take Monday off and will see you right back here on Wednesday with more home tours and DIY projects!
