Master Bathroom Mini-Update, Part One

We arrived home from Cancun Thursday evening, and on Friday Andy suddenly announced that he was going to get started on our master bathroom update!! Some people go into a project with a detailed timeline for getting it done… some people just wake up one day and decide to go for it. Haha.

To be fair, we’ve been talking about this renovation since we bought this house. We even had already bought most of the important pieces (emphasis on “most” — more on that later!). The vanity, sink and mirror have all been sitting in our garage for months. The light, ugh, we’ve had that probably more like two years, when we honestly thought this would be our next project. Sigh. So what have we been waiting on?  (Besides having two little kids who take up all our time …) The big debate was whether we wanted to do a complete top-to-bottom renovation including a new shower and floor tile, or if we wanted to hold off on those bigger, more expensive, more time-consuming projects, and just do now what we can. Well, as you already saw in the title, we went with a mini-update. It would have been awesome to do everything at once and come out with a gorgeous all-new bathroom, but since we don’t really want to spend the money and don’t have the time to devote to that bigger project right now (which we plan on DIYing as much as possible), we decided to just do what we can for now. The rest we’ll hopefully do next year.

I think A LOT of people go through a similar debate, whether it’s a bathroom or kitchen, or any big ticket renovation, and I’m a big believer in doing what you can to improve your home, when you can do it. The key to making improvements in phases is to think big picture. Know ahead of time what you want to do and work towards that final goal. It would be a mistake to install something now that you have to take out later. For example, in our case, we aren’t replacing our toilet, even though I despise our current toilet, because we know it will be a ton easier to take the old toilet out when we replace the floor tile. That’s not a job we want to do more than once.

We’ll get into all the nitty gritty DIY details in a future post, but for now I just wanted to give you a little update on what’s going on, since it’s not finished… becauuuuse, we never got around to buying a faucet. Whoops. So we ordered one over the weekend and it won’t be here until at least next week. Ugh. So for now we’re using the kids’ bathroom, which luckily is just around the corner. We’re also holding off on installing the mirror/medicine cabinet until after the faucet is installed so we know the height.

Enough talk, here’s what our master bathroom used to look like. It’s such a tiny, narrow space, it’s very tricky to photograph.

The dark, ornate, rounded vanity was not our style, and we kept losing things on the shelves, so we updated to a more modern vanity from Ikea with drawers that make it easier to see what’s in there.

Oh, that’s a before photo for you! Notice the lovely toilet paper holder that broke a few months ago, and the vanity door is broken too. Classy. Ha.

We love, love, love the new light from Sazerac Stitches, one of our favorite places to find unique, modern, high-quality lighting. (The overhead light in Joey’s room is also from there.) In here we have the West End Sconce in Matte Black and it’s soooo pretty.

I am SO EXCITED to start putting the details of this room together. We have a pretty medicine cabinet (and that’s not an oxymoron — who knew?!), and some gorgeous new fabric for curtains. Then I still need to decide on all the other fun stuff.
