Rumpus room redo
Andy and I spent some time this weekend thinking about what we want to do in our rumpus/family/TV/dinner-on-the-couch room. It’s where we spend by far the most time, so we really want it to be comfortable and reflect our personal styles. We like a lot about the room already, but there’s a few things we want to tweak.
One of the issues we have in our house is that I inherited a ton of antique furniture from my parents that goes back several generations. It’s not a terrible problem to have! But sometimes it means our house doesn’t really feel like us. After starting with all of my inherited furniture mixed with the random pieces we’d picked up over the years ourselves, Andy and I are now trying to bring in new pieces that make our house feel more like us.
Between me and Andy, our personal styles are mostly vintage midcentury plus a little industrial — clean lines but with character. We spent Saturday afternoon touring lots and lots of vintage and antique stores looking for pieces for our home, but didn’t really find anything. We are especially interested in replacing our TV stand and finding a place to keep his record player and vinyl collection. Eventually we’d love to replace our couch (but I’m going to have a really hard time letting go of the one we have that’s super sentimental to me!). We want to stick with the vintage school theme that we have going on in that room, with things like a huge pull-down map of the U.S. and an old chalkboard, but we want to freshen up the furniture a bit.
pennant | lamp | credenza | side table | couch When we couldn’t find anything at local shops this weekend, I started looking online and was able to find some pieces that I think really meet our needs. I already went ahead and ordered this lamp since it was on sale — yay! We have a similar lamp now, but the on/off switch is broken. This credenza will be perfect for us as a TV stand. It’s exactly the midcentury styling that we were looking for, with an industrial edge, and I looove that we can hide all of Andy’s video game equipment behind the sliding doors. It’s also a better price than a lot of similar ones other places. This side table should hold our record player perfectly and is also a good place to put a new table lamp. I’m obsessed with this couch from Thrive, though we’d need to still decide on a color (I love the yellow but it’s probably not real practical for us!). I might really need to buy this pennant from Three Potato Four that has the cutest saying on it. We still haven’t come up with a storage solution for Andy’s record collection, but we’ll keep looking. Maybe we should do something as simple as some stacked wire baskets, but we’ll see. I’m really excited to move forward with our rumpus room and really make it fun and personal!
