Room of the day: Emily Henderson

If I ever win the lottery, I am hiring Emily Henderson to be my personal decorator. We’ll go shopping all the time and have so much fun talking about rugs and chairs and bellbottoms, and I’ll have the most amazing house ever. That’s what you get when you win the lottery.

But for now I can just admire her work from afar. Like this room, which was on last season’s Secrets From a Stylist, and which might be one of my favorite rooms ever.

She called this guest room “Graphic Novel Antique Geek Chic,” which pretty much describes me and Andy. He’s the graphic novel geek and I’m the antique chic. Ok, fine, maybe we’re both geeks. But whatever.

Let’s break this down.

I don’t like wallpaper. I know all the designers love it, and it’s all super fashionable right now, but I spent approximately three years of my high school life painstakingly peeling 23 layers of wallpaper from our stairway one crumbling piece at a time. The smell of wallpaper paste still haunts my dreams. However, HOWEVER, this particular wallpaper is awesome. Look at it closer…

Eek, it’s brilliant. It’s “All of Us Together” by Geoff McFetridge. Isn’t it fun? I think it’s perfect for a guest room. Yeah, maybe I’d go a little nuts if this was in my own bedroom and I’d lie in bed looking at it all the time memorizing names for all of these people, but I’ve always thought it’s good to give guests something to look at in a guest room, with art, some books on the nightstand, and maybe I’ll even say wallpaper. It’s good to give guests some stories to help them fall asleep in an unfamiliar room.

This is totally my style: the midcentury dresser with the funny white midcentury lamp, the giant “O” (how awesome is that, by the way?), and then the antique telephone and clock. There’s ball fringe on the window coverings. BALL. FRINGE. I love the layered mix of styles and eras in this room, effortlessly moving between decades. That’s what makes a house a home and not a showroom. And that’s what makes Emily Henderson my favorite.
