Front Door Update

Front Door Update

You guys! Do you remember when a whole bunch of you chimed in and voted on a front door color for our new house? Well, we did it! We painted our front door!

We’ve actually made a few fun updates to the entrance of our house — painting the door, changing the light fixture and doing a cute DIY update on the old mailbox. To jog your memory, here’s what our entrance looked like before with a dark green door and mailbox and boring old light:

And here it is now!

We chose Beach Sparkle (Valspar 5004-9C)! It’s the second row, right, in the top photo, but I think it looks way better in person, a little brighter and more of a turquoise/aqua/sky blue than mint. Mostly it’s a bright and cheerful without being crazytown.

We love our colorful front door, but here’s the thing, though. When your to-do list is totally epic, you sometimes have to pick an easy project and just get it done, even when that project might not make a whole lot of sense in the context of all the projects that aren’t yet done. But at least you got to cross something off your list, right? And the rest, well, you’ll get to it eventually. That’s pretty much what’s happening with our front door right now. It’s done. We love it. We’re so happy to look at it every day. But in the grand scheme of the house, well, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense because the shutters and garage door are still dark green, which doesn’t look great with the turquoise door, but since we’re already getting frost outside, painting the shutters will have to wait until Spring. So the new door color is a little weird/not very matchy for now, but at least it’s done and we love it. And sometime next year it’ll make sense.

As a reminder, here’s what our house looks like with the dark green shutters and garage door that we have now:

A while back I whipped up a really quick mock up to show Andy a couple different color options for the shutters and garage door. Originally we’d been thinking a dark navy blue would be nice with the tan/beige/sand-colored siding, but then we started to think with the bright blue door, that might be adding too many different colors and end up being a little circus-y. So I paid attention to other houses I drove past with similar-colored siding to see what shutter/garage color worked well with them. The two that stood out the most to me were white and black, which I wasn’t expecting, to be honest, so here’s what they each would look like:

We decided we don’t like the white shutters. Too boring.

But the black shutters look really good, like really surprisingly good. It’s funny because it wasn’t even a color on my radar until I saw it on another house. If you could imagine this photo with the new turquoise front door, I think it would be pretty awesome. Classic, sophisticated and crisp, but also cheerful and modern. What do you think?

Just for fun, here’s a little side-by-side comparison of the door a couple months ago and the door now… way better, right?! (The house color on the before is more accurate, but the front door color is pretty correct on the after.)

Since this post is already a mile long, we’ll talk about the new light and updated mailbox next time!

Have a great Monday, guys!
