Master Bathroom Mini-Update, Part Two

We made some progress!

A couple of weeks ago we updated you on the changes we had made (somewhat spontaneously!) to our bathroom over the weekend, which you can read more about HERE if you missed it. Well, this week we also got the faucet, mirror and curtains installed, which means all the major pieces of the room are in!

As a reminder, this is what the room looked like before, with an ornate vanity, mirror and light fixture that weren’t our style and didn’t function well for us (as in, that mirror was totally busted and the toilet paper holder had fallen off the wall!):

We replaced the big, curvy, carved vanity with a modern floating cabinet from Ikea in a walnut finish with a white sink. The two drawers make it so much easier to find everything, instead of things getting shoved to the back where it’s dark and you don’t even know what’s there and you’re kind of afraid to put your hand back there because, seriously, what’s back there?! (Just me?) We also added a matte black faucet, a modern new black and wood medicine cabinet and pretty sconce from Sazerac Stitches, and then on the other side of the room, which you can see reflected in the mirror, are the new curtains I sewed using Nate Berkus fabric in a pretty black and gold palm leaf print.

The medicine cabinet has a wood “drawer” that slides out to the side, which is such a unique and fun detail. We were originally planning on putting in a mirror, not a medicine cabinet, because most medicine cabinets tend to be super expensive. We’d actually already bought a mirror. But when I stumbled on this storage mirror at UO, I knew it would be just the look we were going for, and we could always use more storage in such a small bathroom. (The mirror we originally bought is now in our family room!) I love love love how the pretty Sazerac Stitches light fixture looks with the medicine cabinet and faucet.

We also replaced the handles that came with the vanity with some new brass bar pulls. Replacing hardware is such an easy and inexpensive way to make a piece more custom. These handles were just $12 total — including shipping! — and took like 30 seconds to install. Totally worth it! I went with brass instead of black because I wanted to bring in a different, warmer element and not get too matchy matchy with only matte black. The hardware on the shower is oil rubbed bronze, which looks almost black. I plan on adding some other brass accents in the room.

We’re not quite finished yet. Next we want to put some shelves above the toilet and we’re still missing things like a hook for hand towels and a toilet paper holder. Then we need to add some character pieces — some art, some plants, things to give the room some personality, because bathrooms deserve to be decorated too!
