Our Visit to Excellence Playa Mujeres in Cancun, Mexico

Last week Andy and I spent three nights/four days in paradise at Excellence Playa Mujeres* in Cancun, Mexico for some much-needed R&R after a hectic past few months. This was actually our second time at this resort (and my third because I went with some friends before Andy and I started dating, actually as a work trip). Excellence Playa Mujeres is an all-inclusive, adults only resort about half an hour north of Cancun in an isolated, quiet area along the coast.

We spent a ton of time brainstorming future house projects, took naps, read books, drank plenty of fruity drinks and came home feeling so much more rejuvenated and ready for real life. As a matter of fact, our first day home we jumped right into a bathroom renovation!

Here are a few photos from our trip.

We seriously debated taking our kids — there’s an all-inclusive, family-friendly resort next door run by the same company — but ultimately decided that taking a six-month-old and two-year-old would not be the slightest bit relaxing since we’d have to worry about them the whole time, and honestly, they probably wouldn’t really enjoy it that much. So they had a fun staycation at home with their grandparents (who they like more than us anyway!), while we got to indulge in as many fruity drinks and cervezas as we wanted, eat whenever we wanted (so much eating!) and sleeeeeep in. I think I even managed to sleep past 7 a.m. one day! I also gained back all the weight I’ve lost after having Olly, but it was worth it!

Above is our room and below is the view of our private patio with access to the pool.

Andy and I both never thought we’d be “all-inclusive resort” type people. We usually try to spend as little time in a hotel as possible when we travel, so we can get out and try local restaurants, see local sights and walk local streets, but to be honest, the first time I went to Excellence I totally changed my mind and convinced Andy to try it, too. There is something so relaxing and freeing about not having to pay for anything! I wouldn’t want every vacation to be all-inclusive, since I do think it’s important to see the world, but for a few days every once in a while, it’s the ultimate vacation from every worry. Plus, Excellence Playa Mujeres totally ruins you for every other resort because it’s so fabulous.

This is the view from the main pool. There’s a swim-up bar, and the crowd is mostly older with some honeymooners. This isn’t a college spring break type resort, which is another reason we like it so much. This time of year in late February it was very quiet and not at all crowded.

I finished 2.5 books in four days, haha. “My Husband’s Wife” was a book club book that I thought was depressing and full of people I did not like. I also started reading the Amelia Peabody mystery series, which is much more my style. Send me your recommendations for books I should read next with happy people doing happy things!

It’s fun to get dressed up every once in a while when you’re used to being covered in spit up at all times!

I loved this view of the sky and cactus garden on our last morning as we were leaving, and of course all the beautiful palm trees throughout the resort.

It was so nice to take a break and get away for some sunshine and total relaxation. The best thing about traveling without our children was that we were JUST as happy to go home as we were to go away!! Our next trip will definitely be a family vacation. Where should we go?!

(*This is not sponsored. I just wanted to share our experiences in case anyone else is thinking about planning a beach vacation!)
