The Easiest Mocha Latte in a Vitamix

The Easiest Mocha Latte in a Vitamix

Funny story: a couple years ago Andy’s new boss’s boss — the big boss — invited him to get a coffee. They walked over to a Starbucks near the office and when the boss asked Andy what he wanted, Andy said, “oh nothing… I just had an apple juice at my desk.” Oh, Andy, are you 12?? Then the boss proceeded to sit at a table to drink his coffee and chat, while Andy sat there with… nothing. SO AWKWARD!! The hilarious story has taken on legendary status around Andy’s office now, haha!

Needless to say, Andy immediately made it his mission to find a coffee-shop drink he actually liked and could order to avoid any similarly awkward situations in the future. At that point, neither of us drank coffee (though I was a fan of chai lattes). Several trials and errors later he discovered the mocha latte and when he told me it was basically a hot chocolate with coffee in it, well, count me in!

After first developing a very expensive daily Starbucks habit, we then discovered we could make a really delicious, hot and frothy mocha at home, with three easy ingredients, right in our Vitamix mixer — game changer!!!

We have a Vitamix A3500*, and it’s amazing. It’s seriously the kitchen tool we use the most often, behind only the fridge, stove and dishwasher. Honestly, when we first got it we thought we wouldn’t use it much. I mean, we’d never really used our old, crappy blender very much except for the occasional smoothie, but that was before we knew just how much better the Vitamix was and how many things we could make in it. It’s for way more than just smoothies. You can make soups, peanut butter, your own powdered sugar… and, of course, a morning mocha.

To make one mocha latte, you’ll need:

  • 1 cup milk (we use whole milk, but any kind would do — almond, skim, etc.)
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips (we prefer semisweet chips and we like a heaping scoop!)
  • 1 tsp. instant espresso like Medaglia D’Oro which is at most grocery stores
  • powerful blender like the Vitamix A3500

Just pour all of the ingredients into the Vitamix, slowly raise the dial to the highest speed and blend for four minutes. One of our favorite features on the Vitamix 3500 is that you can set the timer so it will automatically turn off at four minutes, instead of having to watch it — which is just never practical with kids and crazy mornings. When it’s done, you’ll have a hot, steamy, frothy, delicious mocha latte just like the coffee shop but for a fraction of the cost, all without changing out of your pjs!

You can add whipped cream, throw a Reese’s peanut butter cup in to make a buckeye mocha, or some mint chips, cinnamon… It’s really a blank slate to play around with different flavors if you like, and every ingredient is adjustable. We like our mochas very chocolatey, but you could easily lessen the amount of chips and use more espresso powder if you like a stronger drink. We find that chips work better than chocolate syrup because they make for a thicker, less watery drink.

To make mochas for two, just double everything and blend for five minutes.

Adorable mug by Shore Society. We bought these for the cabin — won’t they be perfect?!
