Oliver’s Beachy Nursery Reveal

We are so, so excited to show you Oliver’s finished nursery! This room was such a labor of love. It’s full of DIY elements, items from our own childhoods and gifts from friends, which all make it so much more special. Our goal was a room that’s bright and cheerful but yet calm, appropriate for a baby without being too childish, and something that fits in with the rest of our house, and I think we accomplished all of those goals. Every time I walk into this room, I’m immediately happy, and Olly seems to love it just as much!

This is what the room used to look like when we bought our house two years ago:

Purple and beige walls, tan trim, purple curtains, a dark ceiling fan that took up two-thirds of the room… This room was in serious need of an update.

And here it is now:

Our first task was to brighten up three of the walls and all the trim with a coat of bright white paint (“Snowbound” by Sherwin Williams — the same white we used throughout our house) and then we created a fun accent wall with wide-plank “shiplap” using plywood. We painted that wall “Sea Wave” by Valspar. Can you believe this whole wall cost about $40?! We’ll share a DIY tutorial soon. An 8×10 off-white natural fiber rug grounds the whole room — and you guys helped us pick it out, thanks!

We bought the same crib for Olly that we have for Joanna, the Sundvik crib from Ikea. At just $119 it’s such a deal, but we’ve also been very, very happy with it for almost two years in Joey’s room. Olly’s room is only about 10’x11′, so having a compact crib is critical.

This rainbow mobile hung in my room throughout my whole childhood! As soon as I started imagining a beach-themed room, I knew I wanted to incorporate it in some way, but I didn’t decide to use it as a mobile until the last minute. I’m SO glad I did because Olly loves looking at it and I love having something in this room with so much sentimental value to me. Every time I see him looking at it, I remember all the time I would stare up at it when it hung from my canopy bed with the Holly Hobby bedspread!

You guys also helped us choose the dresser. It has plenty of room for a changing pad on top. Andy built a wood box to hold the changing pad and attached that to the dresser from the back, so we can remove it when Olly doesn’t need it anymore. In the drawers we have all of our diapering supplies, burp cloths, little baby socks, bibs, and clothes.

To continue with the rainbow theme, I made this wallhanging to go above the changing table (I’ll share a tutorial soon!). He loves looking at it during diaper changes. The shelf is from Ikea as well as the brackets, which we stained. I also made the “Oliver” wood sign. The book on the shelf, Walk This World by Jenny Broom and Lotta Nieminim, is such a pretty one that we’ll be reading to the kids for many, many years. One of my best friends made the sock monkey for Olly and the wooden block with his name and birthdate was a gift from another best friend. I used to play the ukulele so just had to get a toy uke for Olly to go with the beachy theme of his room.

Little baby shoes are the cutest.

Reading stories before bed has been one of our favorite things with Joey so we knew having a place to hold books in Olly’s room was absolutely necessary. We bought these spice racks at Ikea for just $3.99 each(!) and stained them. Even with Ikea shipping, they came to less than $20 (cheaper than driving to an Ikea!). The sunset art by Rachel Jernigan we bought at the very first Cleveland Flea a few years ago. I’m so glad it found a home in this room.

Or she just “reads” to him herself! This is one of our favorite books — She Persisted by Chelsea Clinton and Alexandra Boiger. It’s great for girls AND boys.

The top image is a photo of a rainbow that I snapped for Instagram when we were in Hawaii in May (pregnant with Oliver!). We had it printed and framed by Framebridge, and I LOVE how it turned out. It’s not the greatest photo ever — I literally took the photo through the car window! — but it’s a special memory from an amazing trip. I made the “pineapple of my eye” pennant and it’s one of my favorite craft projects to date!

This little outfit was Andy’s! So cute.

Andy made this plant stand. I love how many DIY elements there are in this room. It makes it so personal and special.

We bought this vintage surf-inspired print by Nick Kuchar while we were in Maui, and I love it so much. By the way, that fiddle leaf fig is completely faux! We wanted a plant in here but this room doesn’t get much light, and I don’t trust little fingers with real plants anyway. This one isn’t too shabby for about $50 at Target. Sadly it’s no longer available or I’d get some for other rooms in our house!

This Land of Nod rocking chair used to be in Joanna’s room, but now we rock Olly to sleep in it every night. It’s nice to have memories of both of babies in this same chair, and it’s a great small size. The adorable pineapple table lamp and side table are both from Target.

So that’s Oliver’s room! I think it’s the happiest room in our house, and even though it’s also the smallest room, I love hanging out in here, reading with Olly and Joey, playing with cute little baby outfits… even changing diapers isn’t so bad when the room is so cute!
